Game Preview

No. 6 Roadrunners Host No. 2 Phoenix Country Day

The San Tan Charter Roadrunners (13–7, 4–0 2A East) host the Phoenix Country Day Eagles (16–2) Wednesday at 6:00 PM in a non-region match between the sixth- and second-ranked teams in the AZPreps365 2A rankings. San Tan Charter has already clinched first place in the 2A East, winning all four region matches without dropping a set, and closed last week with sweeps of Miami and Lincoln Prep. Phoenix Country Day, the 2A state champion in 2021 and 2022, has won 16 of 18 matches, 12 of its 14 dual matches by 3–0, with both losses coming on the road in five sets at Chandler Prep and in three at Cicero Prep.

The two teams share five opponents. Both lost 2–3 to top-ranked Chandler Prep — San Tan Charter at home on October 13, Phoenix Country Day in Chandler on September 15 — and both swept ALA – Anthem South. Phoenix Country Day swept Scottsdale Prep, Benjamin Franklin and Scottsdale Christian; San Tan Charter beat Scottsdale Prep in four, needed five sets at Benjamin Franklin and was swept at Scottsdale Christian.

Keys to the Game

  • Serve Tough: Libero Kendall Antell leads the Roadrunners with 39 aces and setter Ella Shoap has 28. A team that has lost only six dual-match sets all season has rarely been pushed out of system; the serve is where San Tan Charter can do it.
  • Feed the Middle: Senior middle blocker Aubrey Michalos leads San Tan Charter with 116 kills and 20 blocks. Shoap's 290 assists run the offense, and the Roadrunners hit .194 against Chandler Prep's block in their five-set loss.
  • Win the Long Rallies: Antell's 224 digs and 359 serve receptions anchor the back row. Phoenix Country Day's two losses were its two longest matches of the season — the Eagles went five at Chandler Prep and dropped three close sets (19–25, 22–25, 23–25) at Cicero Prep.
Non-region match between two of the top six teams in 2A. Phoenix Country Day won the 2A state championship in 2021 and 2022 and reached the 2023 final; San Tan Charter has won its region and sits sixth in the AZPreps365 rankings.
